Fireplace Grates
Types of fireplace grates The fireplace grates are generally made of steel bar and cast iron. The grate heaters are also available for wood. The steel bar used only for wood and not for coal as the bars are spread too far apart. The wood can be burned on the steel bar and cast iron as they have a tendency to hold the embers on the grate. Grates made of cast iron lasts longer than the steel grates. Grate heaters are tubular and hollow, and blow hot air when heated. 1. Steel bar grates have thick bars that are widely spaced. Thicker the bars longer the life expectancy. However, if the grate is used only for special occasions like birthdays then it is advisable to use light duty grate. If the grate is frequently used then give preference to middle grade to high-grade grate. It is advisable to burn hard woods to soft wood, as the soft woods will add stress to the grates. If fireplace grates is fused daily then it is recommended to buy the thickest and the heaviest grate. 2. Cast iron grates can be used to burn as well as coal since they have small gaps on the bottom to allow the coal or wood chunks to stay on the grate longer. Like the steel grates the cast iron grates can be chosen according to the frequency of usage. For rare and occasion use light weight and for daily use more the heavier better. 3. Grate heaters are hollow tubes that blow heat when heated. The costlier the grater the more efficient is it's functioning. These grates are controlled by thermostat so the fan turns off and on automatically once the tubing gets hot. To make the fireplace grater last longer buy a quality one. To prevent the grates from rusting add a good chimney to keep the moisture out of the firebox.
